What is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. It typically occurs when the nerve is compressed, often due to a herniated disc, disc bulge or spinal stenosis.
Can Sciatica be Treated?
Absolutely! While sciatica can be uncomfortable, effective treatment strategies can help alleviate symptoms, improve mobility, and promote healing.
What Can You Do About It Today? Try These Tips:
Modify Activities: Identify activities that worsen your pain, such as prolonged sitting or heavy lifting, and modify them to reduce strain on your back and legs.
Pain Management: Use ice packs on the affected area for 15-20 minutes several times a day to help reduce inflammation. Heat therapy can also relieve muscle tension.
Gentle Stretching: Incorporate gentle stretching exercises for your lower back and hips. Try to avoid hamstring stretching as it may make symptoms worse.
Strengthening Exercises: Gradually introduce core-strengthening exercises to support your spine. Begin with isometric exercises and progress to dynamic movements as your comfort increases.
Posture Awareness: Pay attention to your posture during daily activities. Using ergonomic furniture and maintaining a neutral spine can help relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Gradual Return to Activity: If you’re recovering from sciatica, gradually reintroduce activities. Start with low-impact exercises and slowly increase intensity as your symptoms improve.
